Under-Sink Reverse Osmosis Explained Simply

Under-sink reverse osmosis is the classic tank-style RO system: five stages of filtering feed a small pressurized tank, so purified water is ready at its own faucet. It makes about 100 gallons per day and runs on water pressure alone, with no electricity, so it fits kitchens without an outlet under the sink.

If the chlorine taste in your tap water bugs you, or you're done hauling cases of water from the store, this system fixes it quietly under your kitchen sink. It needs no electricity, and it keeps a small tank of purified water ready for whenever you need it.

When You Need Under-Sink Reverse Osmosis

This is a good choice for smaller households, for homes without an outlet under the sink, and for anyone replacing an older tank system. It's also a simple way to add purified water to a rental, basement kitchen or wet bar.

If your RO water tastes off, the faucet slows to a trickle, or the system runs constantly, your filters or tank likely need attention. See our RO Filter Replacement service.

Tank systems are also easy to maintain. Each filter is a separate stage, so you can replace just the ones that are due. That keeps costs down over time.

Because the water is stored under pressure in a tank, you get a steady stream from the faucet. The tradeoff is that a big pot can empty the tank, and it takes a little while to refill.

Many families use the RO faucet for cooking, coffee, tea and pets' water bowls, too.

Our Under-Sink Reverse Osmosis Process

The system we install uses five stages: sediment and carbon filters followed by the reverse osmosis membrane. It makes about 100 gallons per day and stores it in a pressurized tank under the sink.

We set the filters and tank, connect the cold water feed and drain, install the faucet, and flush the system before you use it. You can choose a faucet in chrome, brushed nickel, brushed gold or matte black, and we can add a mineral filter to improve the taste.

The first stages catch sediment and chlorine, which protects the membrane. The membrane removes most dissolved solids. A final carbon stage polishes the taste on the way to your faucet.

We'll show you where the shutoff valve is, how to check the tank, and when each filter is due.

Under-Sink Reverse Osmosis Cost in Salt Lake City

Price depends on your faucet, whether we need to drill the countertop, and any add-ons like a mineral filter. We'll give you one price for the system and installation before we start, plus a simple filter schedule so you know what to expect.

If you want to compare, we can price a tankless system at the same time. Tankless units cost more up front but save cabinet space and waste less water, so it's worth seeing both.

Your quote covers the filters, membrane, tank, faucet, water and drain connections, and a full flush before first use. If you'd like a mineral filter for taste, we'll price it separately so you can decide.

Under-Sink Reverse Osmosis Questions

Does an under-sink RO system need power?

No. It runs on your water pressure alone, so there's nothing to plug in.

How much water does it make?

About 100 gallons per day, stored in a pressurized tank under the sink. A big pot can empty the tank, and it takes a little while to refill.

How many stages does it have?

Five. Sediment and carbon filters protect the membrane, the reverse osmosis membrane removes most dissolved solids, and a final carbon stage polishes the taste.

Can I choose the faucet finish?

Yes. The faucet comes in chrome, brushed nickel, brushed gold or matte black, and we can add a mineral filter for taste.
