RO Filter Replacement Explained Simply

RO filter replacement swaps the sediment and carbon pre-filters on schedule and the membrane when it wears out. Signs they're due: an off taste, a slow faucet, a system that runs constantly or a filter light. An overdue carbon filter lets chlorine reach and damage the membrane. We change only what's due.

The filters in an RO system catch sediment and chlorine before the membrane, and they wear out over time. When they do, water slows down, starts to taste off again, and the membrane wears out faster. If you can't remember the last time you changed your filters, it's probably time.

Fresh filters are the cheapest way to keep an RO system running like new. They're a small cost next to replacing a membrane that wore out early because a carbon filter went too long.

When You Need RO Filter Replacement

The signs are water that tastes or smells different, a slow or dripping faucet, a system that runs constantly, or a filter light on a tankless unit. Even if nothing seems wrong, filters should be changed on a regular schedule, since a worn carbon filter lets chlorine reach the membrane and damage it.

Hard water shortens filter and membrane life, so homes without a softener may need changes more often.

If your system is very old or parts are hard to find, we'll let you know if a new system makes more sense than new filters.

Families who fill a lot of bottles or run an ice maker off the RO line go through filters faster, so their schedule may be shorter.

Nebraska Extension notes that the thin-film membranes used in most home RO systems break down in chlorinated water, which is why the carbon pre-filter matters so much.

Our RO Filter Replacement Process

We identify your system and check which filters are due. For five-stage tank systems, that can include the sediment filter, carbon filters, post-carbon filter and membrane. For tankless systems, it's the combined filter cartridges and, when needed, the control board.

We shut off the water, swap the filters, check for leaks, flush the system, and check the tank's air pressure on tank-style units. We'll tell you when the next change is due.

Low air pressure in the storage tank is a common reason for a slow RO faucet on tank systems, and it's an easy fix.

If your membrane is due, we'll replace it and flush the system before you drink the water.

On tankless units, we'll also check the filter status lights and reset them after the change.

RO Filter Replacement Cost in Salt Lake City

Price depends on your system type and which filters or membrane need replacing. We'll only change what's actually due, and you'll know the price before we start.

Your price covers the filters or membrane we replace, a leak check, a full flush and a tank pressure check on tank-style systems. If something else looks worn, we'll point it out, but we won't replace it without asking.

RO Filter Replacement Questions

How do I know my RO filters are due?

Water that tastes or smells different, a slow or dripping faucet, a system that runs constantly, or a filter light on a tankless unit. Even if nothing seems wrong, filters should be changed on a schedule.

What happens if I don't change the carbon filter?

A worn carbon filter lets chlorine reach the membrane. Nebraska Extension notes that the thin-film membranes in most home RO systems break down in chlorinated water.

Why is my RO faucet slow?

Clogged filters are a common cause. On tank systems, low air pressure in the storage tank is another, and it's an easy fix that we check on every visit.

Do you replace every filter every time?

No. We only change the filters or membrane that are actually due, and you'll know the price before we start.
