Riverton was a farm town for most of its history. Early settlers called it Gardnerville, and it only really grew once canals carried water from the Jordan River up to the benchland. It has since grown from a farming town into a suburban city, bordered by South Jordan, Draper, Bluffdale and Herriman.
A lot of Riverton happens along 12600 South, home to Riverton City Park and Intermountain Health Riverton Hospital, and served since 2025 by UTA's Route 126 bus. City Hall now uses the old Riverton Elementary building on Redwood Road, and on the west side, shoppers head to Mountain View Village.
Riverton's Water Supply
Riverton says its Green Well has been unused since 2015, when the city fully switched to buying water wholesale from the Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District. The city's Green Well Project will add a reverse osmosis plant to purify that well's water and supplement the supply.
Riverton expects residents to notice little to no change in taste or hardness when the Green Well comes online. Jordan Valley lists its water at about 10 grains per gallon, which is hard.
