Murray, home of Murray Park and Fashion Place, is just west of our Salt Lake City office, and Murray City runs its own water system. That means Murray homes have their own water profile, separate from Salt Lake City's and the south valley's.
Around Murray
Murray calls itself the Hub of Salt Lake County, and it runs like one. It's one of the few cities around that operates its own police, fire, power, water, library and school district, and it's been a Tree City USA since 1977. Most people know it for Murray Park, Fashion Place on State Street and Intermountain Medical Center, the city's largest employer.
State Street runs through the Murray Downtown Historic District, past the Desert Star Playhouse in the old Iris Theatre, and I-15 crosses the city with exits at 4500 South and 5300 South. Over on 900 East, Wheeler Historic Farm restores Henry J. Wheeler's turn-of-the-century farm.
Murray's Water: Wells, Springs and Hardness
Murray City's 2022 Water Quality Report lists 27 water sources: 19 deep wells and 8 springs near Big Cottonwood Canyon. The same report gives the average hardness of the supply as 194 mg/L, or 11.4 grains per gallon.
On the U.S. Geological Survey scale, anything above 180 mg/L is very hard. So the average Murray home is on very hard water, and that's before counting the variation between individual wells and springs.
Getting the Most From Your Water in Murray
At an average of 11.4 grains per gallon, Murray's water is on the very hard side, so an undersized softener will regenerate often and use more salt. We size Murray systems with room to spare. Because the city draws on both wells and springs, a test at your own tap is the best guide to how we set your valve.
Water Softener and Water Treatment in Murray
For very hard water, we size the softener generously so it doesn't run out between regenerations. Bigger households often do best with a Dual-Tank Water Softener.
