Iron & Sulfur Removal Explained Simply
Iron and sulfur removal uses hydrogen peroxide injection to break down heavy iron, hydrogen sulfide (the rotten-egg smell) and iron bacteria, followed by catalytic carbon and a softening tank. It's the system for the toughest wells, including ones where an air-injection filter wasn't enough. Peroxide breaks down into water and oxygen.
If your water smells like rotten eggs, stains everything orange, or leaves slimy buildup in the toilet tank, you're dealing with heavy iron, hydrogen sulfide or iron bacteria. We install a system built for exactly that.
When You Need Iron & Sulfur Removal
You need this system if the smell is strong, especially in hot water, if iron levels are high, or if you see reddish slime from iron bacteria. It's also the upgrade when an air-injection Iron Removal System hasn't been enough.
Sulfur gas can leave black stains on silverware and fixtures, and iron bacteria can clog well systems. Waiting only makes both worse.
Hydrogen sulfide is the gas that causes the rotten-egg smell. Even small amounts are easy to notice. It often gets worse in hot water, because the water heater can react with sulfur in the water.
Iron bacteria leave reddish or orange slime behind. Penn State Extension calls them more of a nuisance than a health hazard, but they're hard to get rid of with a one-time treatment, which is why continuous treatment helps.
If you've already tried shocking the well with chlorine and the smell came back, that's a sign the source is ongoing. A continuous system like this one treats every gallon as it comes in.
The smell can also make ice and coffee taste off.
Our Iron & Sulfur Removal Process
We test your water first. The system we install uses a small pump to inject a measured dose of hydrogen peroxide, which oxidizes iron and sulfur and helps control iron bacteria. The water then passes through a 10-inch by 60-inch tank of catalytic carbon and a second tank of 48,000-grain softening resin.
We install the pump and solution tank, both treatment tanks, a brine tank and a bypass, then set the dosing and valves for your water.
Peroxide is a strong oxidizer that breaks down into water and oxygen, so it doesn't leave a chlorine taste behind. The catalytic carbon then removes what's left and helps finish the job.
You'll need to refill the peroxide solution tank from time to time. We'll show you how, or we can take care of it on a schedule.
Iron & Sulfur Removal Cost in Salt Lake City
Price depends on your iron and sulfur levels, your hardness, and the setup at your well. We'll test first, explain the options, and give you one price before we start.
This is our heaviest-duty well system, so it costs more than an air-injection filter. For wells that need it, it's the system that finally makes the smell go away.
Your quote covers the injection pump, the solution tank, both treatment tanks, the brine tank, the valves and the plumbing, plus a water check after startup to confirm the smell is gone.
Why Choose Us
We respond in about 10 minutes on average. We're an authorized dealer for the equipment we install, so the team that sells it is the team that installs and services it. We're Utah locals with offices in Salt Lake City, Draper and Springville, covering everywhere from Bountiful to Spanish Fork. We set the peroxide dose for your well, not a one-size-fits-all number.
