Iron Removal System Explained Simply
An iron removal system uses air injection to turn dissolved iron into particles that a tank of catalytic carbon and iron media filters out, with no chemicals. A second tank of 48,000-grain resin softens the water. It stops the orange and brown stains that iron from a private well leaves on fixtures and laundry.
If you're on a well, you may have tried stain removers, special detergents and new fixtures. The stains always come back because the iron is in the water. We take it out before it reaches your taps.
When You Need an Iron Removal System
You need one if you see orange or brown stains in sinks, tubs, toilets or laundry, water that turns rusty after it sits, or a metallic taste. Iron can also clog pipes, fixtures and softener resin over time.
A regular softener can't handle much iron, so the problem keeps coming back unless the iron is removed first.
Iron comes in two main forms. Dissolved iron looks clear coming out of the tap and turns rusty after it sits. Particle iron is already rusty when it comes out. An air-injection system handles both by turning dissolved iron into particles that the filter can catch.
If you also smell sulfur, air injection can handle some of it. For strong smells, our peroxide system is the better fit.
Iron also stains more than fixtures. It can discolor laundry and dishwasher interiors. Removing it at the well protects all of it.
Penn State Extension notes that well water with iron can look clear at first and then show orange-brown stains once it meets air.
Our Iron Removal System Process
We test your well water for iron, sulfur and hardness. The system we install uses air injection: it adds air to the water, which turns dissolved iron and sulfur into particles. A 10-inch by 60-inch tank of catalytic carbon and specialty iron media catches them.
A second tank of 48,000-grain softening resin handles hardness. It cleans itself on a set schedule and uses no chemicals. We add a bypass and program both valves for your water.
The tank recharges its air pocket during each cleaning cycle, so there's nothing to add or refill between services.
The softening tank uses about 9 pounds of salt per regeneration, and the brine tank holds up to 150 pounds, so topping it up is only needed from time to time.
We'll program the valves for your water and walk you through what the system does during a cleaning cycle, so the sounds at night don't surprise you.
