Water Softener + Carbon Filter Combo Explained Simply

A water softener and carbon filter combo puts softening resin and coconut shell carbon in one tank, so it removes hardness and cuts chlorine taste and smell at once. It suits most Salt Lake City homes on city water, with about 36,000 grains of capacity, or 48,000 for bigger households. It isn't for wells with iron.

City water here is hard, so you get scale and spots. It's also treated with chlorine, so you can taste and smell it. You could buy a softener and a filter separately, but that means two tanks and more room in the garage. A combo system handles both in one tank, and we can have it working in your home quickly.

When You Need a Water Softener + Carbon Filter Combo

This system is built for homes on city water. It's a good fit if you see white crust on faucets and spots on dishes, and you also notice a chlorine smell in the shower or a pool taste in your tap water. It also works well in a townhome, condo or smaller garage where there isn't room for two tanks.

Don't wait on hard water. Scale keeps building inside your water heater, dishwasher and pipes every day. If you're on a private well, this isn't the right system. Iron and sulfur need a Well Water Treatment system instead.

Some people wonder if one tank can do two jobs well. For most city-water homes, it can. The resin handles the hardness and the carbon handles the chlorine taste and smell. The tradeoff is capacity. If your household is large or uses a lot of water, a two-tank system gives you more room on both sides.

It's also a good choice if you've been living with a basic softener and want better-tasting water without adding a second system to the garage.

Our Water Softener + Carbon Filter Combo Process

First we test your water for hardness and check your plumbing. The combo system holds about 36,000 grains of softening capacity in a single 10-inch by 60-inch tank, with a larger 48,000-grain option for bigger households. The same tank holds coconut shell carbon over a gravel base.

On install day we mount the tank and brine tank, add a bypass valve, connect the drain, and program the valve for your hardness and household size. The valve uses ceramic discs and keeps its settings through a power outage for up to 72 hours. If your city uses chloramine, we can swap in catalytic carbon.

When the softener regenerates, it uses about 9 pounds of salt and 45 to 60 gallons of water. The brine tank holds up to 150 pounds of salt, so most homes only need to top it up every so often. We'll set the schedule so it regenerates only when needed.

Once it's running, we'll walk you through the display and how to check your salt, and we'll answer any questions before we leave.

Water Softener + Carbon Filter Combo Cost in Salt Lake City

Price depends on the size you need, the carbon type, and how much plumbing work it takes to connect the system at your main line. A home with an existing softener loop is simpler than one that needs new pipe run. We'll look at your setup, give you one price for equipment and installation, and explain what's included before any work starts.

Water Softener + Carbon Filter Combo Questions

Can one tank really soften and filter?

For most city-water homes, yes. The resin handles hardness and the coconut shell carbon handles chlorine taste and smell. The tradeoff is capacity, so large or high-use households may do better with a dual-tank system.

What size combo system will I need?

The standard system holds about 36,000 grains of softening capacity in a 10-inch by 60-inch tank, and there's a 48,000-grain option for bigger households. We test your hardness and look at your household size before choosing.

Does it work on chloramine?

If your city uses chloramine, we can swap in catalytic carbon, which handles it better than standard carbon.

Is a combo system right for a private well?

No. Iron and sulfur in well water need a well water treatment system instead.
