Brine Tank Replacement Explained Simply

Brine tank replacement swaps a cracked, leaking or overfilling salt tank for a new direct-fit one, so your softener can draw brine and regenerate again. Our standard tank holds 150 pounds of salt. We check the float, brine line and safety valve first, then set the new tank and run a test regeneration.

The brine tank is the shorter tank next to the tall one, and it makes the salty water your softener uses to recharge. When it cracks or its float fails, you get leaks, overflows, or a softener that can't regenerate. You may have mopped up water or scooped out mushy salt already. We can swap it for a new one and get your system back on track.

When You Need Brine Tank Replacement

Replace the tank if you see cracks, water pooling on the floor around it, or a lid and body that are warped or broken. Other signs are a tank that keeps overfilling, standing water well above the salt, or a float assembly that's broken or stuck.

Salt bridges and mushy salt can sometimes be fixed without a new tank, so we'll check first. But a leaking tank only gets worse, and a failed float can flood a garage floor or basement.

The brine tank does a simple job, but it matters. It holds the salt, mixes it with water to make brine, and feeds that brine to the softener during regeneration. If the tank leaks or the float fails, the softener either can't pull brine or overfills with water.

Age, impacts and years of salt sitting against the plastic can all weaken a brine tank.

If your softener isn't using any salt at all, the brine tank and its float are among the first things we check.

Our Brine Tank Replacement Process

We check the brine line, float and safety valve to confirm the tank is the problem. Then we empty the old tank, set a new direct-fit brine tank in place, and move over or replace the float assembly. Our standard tank holds 150 pounds of salt and measures about 15 by 17 by 36 inches.

We reconnect the brine line and overflow, add salt, and run a regeneration to make sure the softener draws brine and refills to the right level.

We'll also clean out old salt mush and check the brine well and float for wear. If the salt had bridged, we'll show you how to spot it early next time.

Salt matters too. We'll recommend the right type for your softener. Clean, high-purity salt pellets or crystals leave less residue at the bottom of the tank, which helps prevent mushing and bridging.

Brine Tank Replacement Cost in Salt Lake City

Price depends on the tank size your softener needs and whether the float, brine line or safety valve also need replacing. We'll give you the price before any work starts, and we'll tell you if any other part should be swapped while we're there.

A new brine tank is usually one of the smaller softener repairs. It's much less than a new system, and it can add years of life to a softener that's otherwise in good shape.

Your price covers the tank, the float setup, reconnecting the brine line and a test regeneration, so you know the softener is drawing brine and refilling the way it should.

Brine Tank Replacement Questions

Can a brine tank be repaired instead of replaced?

Salt bridges and mushy salt can often be fixed without a new tank, so we check first. A cracked or leaking tank only gets worse, so that one needs replacing.

Why is there standing water in my brine tank?

Standing water well above the salt usually points to a stuck or broken float, or a problem with the brine line or safety valve. We check all three before replacing anything.

What size is the replacement tank?

Our standard direct-fit tank holds 150 pounds of salt and measures about 15 by 17 by 36 inches. We match the tank to your softener.

What kind of salt should I use?

Clean, high-purity salt pellets or crystals leave less residue at the bottom of the tank, which helps prevent mushing and bridging.
